Radon is an invisible, odourless and tasteless gas that occurs naturally in soil, rocks and water. As a naturally occurring radioactive gas, it forms during the decay of uranium, which is present in small amounts in nearly all soils. Radon can rise from the ground and enter enclosed spaces like homes, workplaces and schools. Once inside, it can accumulate and pose potential health risks. Some Radon may be present in homes and offices through the presence of items like granite counters or worktops, in small quantities.
Why is Radon testing important?
The Environmental Protection Agency classifies Radon as a carcinogen, and it is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the UK. As a result, Radon testing is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of those living or working in buildings. After, unless you measure something, how can you control it?
How often should a Radon test be carried out?
The frequency of Radon testing is dependent on several factors, including the type of building, the region where the building is located and the presence of other environmental or health-related risks. For commercial buildings, such as office buildings, it is recommended that Radon testing be done at least once a year. Commercial buildings are often in more densely populated areas and are likely to have higher concentrations of Radon due to being surrounded by other buildings with elevated levels of Radon. Additionally, office spaces may have poor air circulation which can further elevate Radon levels. In some areas, with higher than normal background Radon, it is not unknown for mortgage lenders to insist on a Radon test prior to offering a mortgage!
What can be done to combat high radon levels?
Radon can't be removed or reduced, but it can be diluted to safe and manageable levels. That's where we come in - we can install ventilations systems which adequately dilute your environment, be that a home or commercial environment. Get in touch to find out more.
